Replacing WILL with WHY
Updated: Feb 20
Willpower is draining. Period. Needing to have the willpower to do something or stay away from something can be exhausting. So exhausting, in fact, that it’s that much easier to do things that don’t require any of it at all.
However, the biggest issue here is not willpower but not understanding that willpower isn’t the essential piece of committing to a new pattern or ditching an old one.
See, Kobe Bryant didn’t accomplish all that he did on sheer willpower. The man was relentless in his pursuit for greatness because he obsessed over it. He was the one who showed up before practice started and stayed after it ended because he knew deep inside of him that he was made for greatness and that he was serving a grander purpose. Even after being up 2-0 in the 2009 finals he knew that his job was far from complete. Click here to watch his response during the press conference.
We are all the Kobe Bryants of OUR lives. Having the will to get up out of bed is helpful but knowing why we are getting up is what will make us jump out of bed. If you struggle to get out of bed in the morning it's because you haven’t defined your WHY good enough yet. We must develop friendly reminders all around us, whether it's on our ceilings, our office desks, or on the wall by the front door to keep us aligned. Distractions are everywhere and they serve their purpose. They are set in place to test our strength.
Do you want to live a healthier lifestyle? Great, now ask yourself why you want it. Is your answer good enough for you to make a lifestyle change? If not, you need to refine your reason to make it so emotionally convicting that you won’t settle for anything short of perfection. I’m referring to the Mamba Mentality. Whatever you choose you want to enhance in your life; make sure you do it with all your might and have a crystal clear focus.
Share your desired state with loved ones. Take a few minutes each day to meditate on the topic bringing positive energy to the outcome. Surround yourself with people who are already in the position you want to be in. Frame your mindset around being the type of person who currently is healthy. And last but not least, don’t ask yourself WILL you do it but WHY wouldn’t you?
